Engineering Manager

The Role

Interlink Electronics Inc., a Nasdaq listed company, is a global sensor technology and printed electronics solution provider with a diverse portfolio of sensor technologies including force, piezoelectric, gas and environmental sensors and products. We are seeking a seasoned Engineering Manager with a minimum of 8-10 years’ experience and a college degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or both from a respected university. The successful candidate must have a proven track record of developing, leading and managing a diverse and distributed engineering organization. The ideal candidate will bring a very strong electrical and mechanical background specifically related to sensor technology. You will be based in our Bay area location close to Freemont, CA. You will lead a global engineering team from this location. You will develop, lead and mange a team with resources located in the USA, Singapore and Shenzhen, China. This team consists of mechanical, electrical, FW, test, project engineers and technicians who are responsible for product development of custom sensors from our product portfolio. You will apply strong engineering management expertise to all aspects of our sensor solution development lifecycle (concept to mass production). You must have very strong leadership and project management skills. In addition, you need to be able to work both independently and as part of a global sensor technology company supporting the creation of custom sensor solutions. The role will require close interaction with senior management in ensuring corporate goals are achieved. You will also be required to engage directly with customers and the sales team to support new business opportunities. You need to be perceived as a “sensor expert” by customers. This is a “hands on” role and you will on occasions need to carry out certain activities independently from the team. Frequent international travel will be required to support engineering tasks and key customer relationships. This position reports to the Executive team.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for the design, development and qualification of sensor products.
  • Implement appropriate engineering methods for product development and testing,
  • Develop processes, metrics, standards, and best practices to create a best-in-class engineering department.
  • Set annual goals and pro-actively measure and report on performance to drive process improvements within engineering.
  • Manage and allocate engineering resources using project management tools.
  • Ensure all engineering data (BOM’s, CAD data, compliance, etc.) is managed using PLM software.
  • Monitor and ensure key milestones are met and resolve conflicts of time, scope, and resources as needed.
  • Be prepared to take a lead project management role on strategic projects.
  • Work with product management and sales to develop and enhance current product offerings, features, and capabilities to meet and exceed customer needs and expectations.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop, test and release products on time within budget.
  • Drive the team to have a strong customer focus in everything they do.
  • Direct and coordinate short term and strategic projects.
  • Manage sustaining engineering requirements.
  • Work with Operations team to ensure smooth product releases and new product introduction.
  • Work with, mentor, and actively develop engineering team. – make them better! 
  • Prepare status reports regarding current projects as needed.

Experience

  • Experience managing a global engineering group including mechanical, electrical, and development engineers.
  • Experience designing and developing electronic products involving sensors, microcontrollers and wireless communication with expertise in sensor systems highly desired.
  • Experience with engineering systems support and implementation including product structures, revision control and quality documentation.
  • Ability to interpret customer functional requirements and design products to meet electrical, mechanical, and environmental specifications.
  • Good experience and knowledge of AutoCad and 3D design using SolidWorks or similar is required.
  • Experience with electronic design tools such as Altium.
  • Knowledge of wireless, Bluetooth and related communication technologies.
  • Good knowledge of printed electronics technologies and the processes used in printed device manufacturing is desirable: screen printing, coating technology, die-cutting, converting, laminating, stamping, laser cutting, assembly and electrical test.
  • Experience with electronic manufacturing of rigid and flex PCB including SMT.
  • Experience with medical devices and automotive requirements and familiarity with APQP is highly desirable.
  • Good communicator who can collaborate/write/prepare/present reports and proposals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under short deadlines with changing priorities.
  • Exceptional problem-solver with ability to analyze/identify/solve problems or customer issues regarding existing products and new designs.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with internal teams and customers.
  • Exhibit a high level of motivation and initiative.

Additional Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering (MSc preferred).
  • 8-10 years’ engineering management experience leading global engineering teams.
  • Experience with 2D design (AutoCAD), 3D design (SolidWorks) and basic office software is required.
  • Some hardware experience with good knowledge of sensors and transducers, electrical circuit theory, embedded electronics, ,and wireless technology including Bluetooth, BLE, LoRAWan.
  • Computer skills using latest electrical design tools (Altium) as well as modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB, SPICE or similar.
  • DFx (Design for cost, test, manufacturing) experience .
  • Experience with ERP and PLM systems.
  • Basic Mandarin would be very beneficial.
